APRIL 24 Rush Hour “Don’t worry, be happy.”. —BOBBY MCFERRIN, SINGER A story is told about a group of U.S. citizens who were making their way through a remote island. They had employed a group of locals at the seaport and had informed them that they were pressed for time. The first day they moved quickly through the countryside. The second day they continued their relentless pace. The third morning, when they were frantically preparing for another day of rapid travel, they found the natives squatting under the trees refusing to move. When the bewildered and helpless travelers asked them why they were not ready to start, they simply said, “We shall rest today to let our souls catch up with our bodies.” Our failure to take time to live actually prevents us from deriving the best from life. For workaholics there’s no end. Life consists of the endless routine of sitting at the desk, or being on duty at the station, or getting up every morning at five-thirty to catch a six-thirty express train to the city. For the workaholic days turn into months that turn into years same old thing—the long commute, the conference the mail we must answer. We should remember that we do not live to work. We work to live. Mankind assuredly was never meant to beat out his life in hurry and tumult. My grandmother was right. I can still her voice: “Take your time, baby.” Good, hard work is one of humanity’s greatest gifts. But perhaps we can enjoy greater peace of mind if we strive less, or at least reduce the tension of our effort. What good is it to succeed if we cannot enjoy life in the process?

April 25 The Light Is On and Somebody’s Home “I believe in miracles. I’m living proof anybody can come back from the dead.” —JOHN LUCAS, NBA COACH AND A RECOVERING ADDICT “I don’t want to treat this man,” the doctor thought. Though he would not say it aloud, his heart wasn’t in it. Besides being broke, the man was dirty and unkempt. The doctor wondered when his patient had bathed last. Nonetheless he was compassionate and treated his patient’s cuts and bruises. The old fellow thanked him and left the office. Nearly a month later the same man returned. This time he looked much better. He was neatly attired and clean from head to toe. The fellow approached the physician, extended his hand, and said, “I want to thank you for saving my life.” “What do you mean?” the doctor responded. “When I walked through your door last month,” the man explained, “I was near the end. Everything had fallen apart. After wandering the streets I decided that I could not go on any longer. I made my way to the nearest bridge, where I intended to jump and end my life. As I approached the top of the bridge, I saw your office lights and decided to give life one more chance. You were kind and helpful even though I had no money and I was such a mess. Doctor, you made the difference in my living or dying. Since you treated me, things have started to go my way, and now I feel that I truly want to live. And I will, thanks to you.” Just like this doctor, each of us has the power to "light-up" many lives. And likewise others have brightened and blessed our lives in so many ways. None of us knows the strength and the power of our lights. These lights shine brightest when they brighten the paths of others. We are all Stars... We just have different ways of shinning.

WHEN YOUR HUT’S ON FIRE
The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him. Everyday he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his few possessions. One day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, with smoke rolling up to the sky. He felt the worst had happened, and everything was lost. He was stunned with disbelief, grief and anger! He cried out, ‘God! How could you do this to me?’ Early the next day, he was awakened by the sound of a ship approaching the island! It had come to rescue him! ‘How did you know I was here?’ asked the weary man of his rescuers. ‘We saw your smoke signal,’ they replied.
The Moral of This Story:
It’s easy to get discouraged when things are going bad, but we shouldn’t lose heart, because God is at work in our lives . . . even in the midst of our pain and suffering. Remember that the next time your little hut seems to be burning to the ground. It just may be a smoke signal that summons the Grace of God.
P. S. You may want to consider passing this on, because you never know who feels as if their hut is on fire today.
